When you feel, time stops.
Last lesson, I was sharing Iriminage with a 6 kyu. She was the nage and I was the uke, as with most beginners, I’m guilty of it as well. we have a tendency to pull our partner when our partner’s centre of gravity is still stable. It’s a struggle but it works sometime, but it is energy-consuming and inefficient.
Sensei taught us to bring our partner down almost to ground level to effectively break the uke‘s balance before doing the tekan to end in a throw.
This entry is not a discourse about iriminage. Let’s discuss that some other time. What i felt was in that eagerness to do the technique, with the end vision of a ‘spectacular’ throw, we forget about the feeling. The cliche of ‘The ends justifies the means.’ We want to get to the end as soon as possible, we employ whatever means necessary.
Generally, it’s the timing of the technique, but with this lady 6 kyu, it’s about feeling and it transcends time and even timing. In her eagerness to do the technique, she got caught up in the perceived ‘quickness’ and ‘swiftness’ of iriminage, she wanted to get to the end quickly. For a small lady, she certain has a lot of ‘pull’, a physical struggle ensue.
I told her to take her time to do the technique, as she did not bring me low enough to disrupt my CG and tenkan too soon. So I ask her to feel instead. She took about 3 to 4 tries before she felt ‘right’, and I felt satisfied enough with my CG disruption. When she opens up and feel, and I feel that she is feeling, our being at that moment, transcends time.
Time was relevant then as we did that technique in a group, so by spending more time ‘feeling’ she will take up more of others time for practice. What happens then was when I asked her to feel and she tried to feel the technique and my CG, times seem to fall away. She became less concerned to do the technique quickly so that others can have their turn for practice.
Sometimes in our chase for the minute and seconds, we forsake other issues that matters more. Sometimes, by looking the other way, and allow feeling and timing to enter our psyche, the sensation of speed, fast, slow, time will align in a harmonious manner. This way our accomplish our task orderly and composed.
