Dualistic Trappings

You know, our miseries are getting habitually stuck between dualities, we swing from good to bad, left to right, highs and lows, so on and so forth. So we try to seek out this big ideal call harmony. or the ‘middle path’ as Buddhism suggests. Well the middle path as i understood it, until recently, is the ability to venture with balance, forsaking ‘either, or’ and ‘neither, nor’ for ‘and , this i mentioned briefly in my post ‘Fight or Flight’ earlier this year. (https://whoisrandylim.wordpress.com/2012/01/04/fight-or-flight/)

I have some new insight, when I was rereading T Harv Eker’s book, ‘Secrets of the Millionaire Mind‘ and the initial chapters where he also delve on the subject of duality. You see, we can never escape duality, simply by ignoring it.

Say if we seek the ‘middle path’ what makes of it? The existence of the duality! We have to struggle and admit that there is duality in life. Seeking balance, equanimity and all that is not about not looking at the dualities we face everyday. IT IS THERE. The thing is, do you want to struggle micro scale or a macro scale. Which is to mean, do you want to struggle with hot/cold, which, in my opinion falls into the realm of ‘micro duality’, Or do you want to face a ‘macro duality’, which is basically, ‘Duality/ Non-duality’ considerations.

What is the difference! Duality is duality no matter how you look at it! True, but here’s the mickey. You displace yourself slightly looking at things from a macro view. It is in the micro-duality that we get caught up personalizing the matter. Say if we take the fight/flight example, we have to make a critical choice, more often than not, we unwittingly place ourselves under duress, because we are the ‘pig’, becoming the ‘ham’, we commit ourselves to the dualistic commitment. We are faced with Fight or Flight. From a macro duality, we are looking at duality/ non-duality, we become the chicken, we are involved, but we remove ourselves from committing to the duality. Suddenly in the duality column, you have more choices, you can A-Fight or Flight, B-Flight, C-Fight, D-Fight and Flight, E-Flight then Fight, or All of the Above. Or Something else from the non-duality section. Suddenly, realities become spontaneous, becomes real, no longer fixated by only 2 options.

The point is, we cannot escape the reality of duality, simply by just looking only at the non-duality part. The duality part, justifies the existence of the non-duality part. they are halves, simply working on one part is like trying to workout your biceps ignoring the triceps, which is almost physically impossible. We need to look at both, and yes, admit that that is duality, and our role is not to eradicate it, as it can never be eradicated, we have to look at both, equally, only then we have a chance of really trekking the middle path.
